Section 3 is concerned with ground studies, including information on landowner relations, the art of retrieving, how to become an observer, balloon maintenance and general safety. Section 4 covers the theory relevant to the PPL written examination papers and also subjects of interest to crew and observers such as propane handling and navigation.
  • Ballooning Handbook by Don Cameron: ISBN 0720712203, Pelham Books, 1980, 2nd-hand copies from Abebooks.
    • Don Cameron, as a founder of a balloon manufacturing company and a CAA examiner of balloon pilots, was often asked to recommend a book covering the requirements of Private Pilot's Licence (hot-air balloons). He found that although some general books covered parts of the syllabus admirably, there was no single volume written with the balloon pilot in mind - hence the Ballooning Handbook. Among the topics discussed are: the fundamentals of hot-air balloon technology; navigation; meteorology and ballooning law. The extent of the author's experience as both pilot and balloon builder, makes this the definitive text for balloonists. It will also be of considerable interest to the armchair aviators who wish to discover the details of this graceful sport.
  • The Air Pilots Manual Vol. 2 - Aviation Law and Meteorology by Trevor Thom: ISBN 1843360667, Air Pilot Publishing, 1st Oct 2003, £20.
    • One of seven volumes which look at flight and ground training today. The manuals are designed to meet the needs of those studying for the Private Pilot Licence. This volume covers aviation law and meteorology using a clear and readable style. Make sure you get the latest edition..
  • Ballooning by David Hempleman-Adams: ISBN 076314911X, BrownTrout U.S., out of print.
    • A practical and un-to-date introduction to every aspect of ballooning, guides the novice throughout the whole process of flying from understanding the theory to managing a smooth landing. There is a section on competitive flying, record breaking, night flying and "extreme" ballooning. Topics include: the workings of a hot-air balloon, equipment and instrumentation; practical instruction in flying, fuel management and landing; the art of retrieving; attending events and putting on displays; advanced ballooning "on the edge"; advice on air law; and an introduction to meteorology.
  • Human Factors for Pilots by Roger Green: ISBN 0291398278, Ashgate Publishing, £19.50.
    • Originally written as a primer to enable commercial pilots to have a complete understanding of the subject, in order to take the UK CAA and similar mandatory exams, this edition is slightly extended to take in the requirements of pilots and other professional aviation personnel.

Some are now out of print but even these may be available from Amazon Books, Abebooks or Alibris.
